This is the first book of a series, but it is a complete story itself--no sudden cliffhangers! Ex-Navy diver Nick, who runs a diving boat service in Hawaii, is contacted by a lawyer in his former home town in Texas, asking him to please come back as soon as possible, as someone he used to know is very ill. The someone turns out to be a former girlfriend, and he discovers, to his amazement, that he has a five-year-old son. There is some sadness to the first part of the book, as the little boy's mother dies, but the author handles it well and it becomes a means to growth and change rather than just a tear-jerker. I actually hesitated before buying the book, as I don't like heavily angst-y or sad stories, but it wasn't like that. Kara, the lawyer handling affairs for the boy's mother, has her own set of concerns from her past. All the characters are human and likeable (other than the one we're not supposed to like), and all the loose ends are tied up in a satisfactory manner. I highly recommend this book!.Product details

A long-time romance reader, I was looking for a new writer I might like when sent me a freebie by Chris Keniston - Honeymoon for One. I finished it in a day and loved her writing style, so I immediately looked for others she had written... and I'm really glad I found this one!! Chris creates great characters and weaves humor, romance, heat and emotion into a terrific story. Nick and Kara are a great pair, and I loved how their relationship changed and grew over the course of the book. I loved the other characters, too, and couldn't wait to buy the second in the series!

This story was a different set up than what I expected. But I liked that and the way that it was written. True, it was a slower paced book but not in a way that dragged. Nick and Kara's life experience were as different as night and day, in an interesting way. Nick was used to one nighters with women and being footloose and fancy free, in Hawaii. Still he was a man who was loyal to his friends and good as a co-business owner. He had a code of honor that he lived by and he lifted his share of the work when it came to his business. Things get totally turned upside down with one phone call from Kara Lynn O'Conner. I'm trying to inform but tread lightly here because I want other readers to get to read the story like I did. It was like one thread was pulled, and the story lines begin to unravel in ways that keep the reader's attention. Mystery after mystery begins to come out. And not just Nick's mystery but the mystery of what happened to Kara to make her so skittish at times. She is a confident, competent loving woman but terror would strike her when she was placed in certain situations. That is all I am going to say about that. Bradley was such a good part of the story and there were also Kara's Aunt Maggie and other secondary people who made for a great family feel to parts of the book. Be prepared for a few more twists and turns and other challenges being worked through. It also had its moments of sadness, where you could feel your emotions being pulled at.
It also sounds like the next book with Nick's business partner, Billy is going to be a good one too.

When Patty Anne knows she's dying, she gets her lawyer, Kara Lynn O'Conner, to find Nick Harper so she can tell him about his son. After Patty Anne refused Nick's proposal years earlier, he couldn't handle a relationship so went through a lot of women without commitment. As a former Navy diver, he bought a dive shop with a friend in Hawaii. This is where Kara Lynn found him and told him Patty Anne wanted to talk to him. He got quite a shock seeing Patty Anne after so many years and learning she was dying. Then the news that he had a son sent him into a tailspin. He didn't know anything about children. How was he going to take care of Bradley? Lucky for him, Kara Lynn had been looking after the boy while Patty Anne was ill so he could rely on her. For a while anyway. His plan was to take Bradley back to Hawaii with him. But before that happened, Nick and Kara Lynn became close, with sparks flying.
This author's creativity and ability to charm her audience are put together in a well-written package that you won't be able to put down. Not only is this an incredibly crafted story, but it is also a hard-hitting tale. This novel is so much more than just your typical romance, and the romance itself is wonderful without detailed bedroom scenes.
