What would you do if something you loved was threatened? When adventurer Rob Fowler and his gang of outdoor junkies come across a pristine cliff dwelling in south-eastern Utah, all their lives are changed. But things are never easy in the desert. No sooner than they learn of this amazing oasis, the possibility that it may be taken away from them rears its head. Leaving a trail of destruction behind them, The Marauders blaze a path across the high plateaus and deep canyons of southeastern Utah, looking for peace, salvation, and escape. Whether they find it is up to how fast they can run - and if fate doesn't have other plans. Touching on issues of wilderness ethics, the ownership of spirituality, and the state of the environmental movement, The Marauders stands as a commentary about and an extension of other works. A must-read for those that are interested in the ethics of the backcountry of the Colorado Plateau.

The Marauders 1 Robert Gay Reviews

Great book for anyone interested in the American southwest and the Colorado plateau
The first evening that I picked up The Marauders, I could hardly put it down - I read 60 pages the first night. What makes this book so compelling is the excellent character development and unique storyline. The main character is a sort of anti-hero; it felt like a guilty pleasure to root for him to succeed. The author, Robert Gay, knows the American Southwest, particularly the Northern Arizona - Southern Utah region well, and describes it in vivid detail. Overall I recommend The Marauders as a fun, adventure read that also packs in thought-provoking messages about the preservation of native lands.
Real life mimics fiction?

Some recent changes implemented by the BLM Montecello Field Office restrict public access to McLloyd Canyon and Moonhouse Ruins on Cedar Mesa UT.

Probe some of the ethical issues driving back country access policy today. In an homage to some of the more recognizable American Southwest authors (Edward Abbey, Craig Childs, Fred Blackburn, and David Roberts come immediately to mind), Robert Gay spins together a cautionary tale. It's as if he had a premonition restricted access to one of the world's "living museums" was just around the corner.

The "Deadwood-esque" language may offend some, but like Deadwood, the language is there to make a backcountry point. And the ruthless treatment of Canadian characters made my chuckle. Pick up a copy of the Marauders as an easy-reading time-killer the next time you have to catch a plane. I did and glad for it. Certainly made me day dream about exploring Moonhouse Ruins again before human access is totally denied...
