I love all these books about the McCabes. As I've stated in earlier reviews, each book fully stands alone, yet each is enhanced by reading all the others. So, without further ado, the review:WHAT I LIKED: Johnny's horse Thunder....I just love that horse's personality!
Johnny's line, which has made an appearance in several of the other books...."be quiet Matt, I'm trying to draw a bead !"
Dusty, he's my favorite of Johnny's 3 sons. I love that he's as good, if not better, than his Pa with a gun. My favorite Dusty moment in this book? When Will Buck manages to penetrate the defenses and into Jessica's yard and is holding a knife to 6 yr old Cora 's throat and has her head in front of his face, Zack and Dusty ride up. Buck says drop yourguns and Zack asks Dusty if he can make the shot. Dusty says in my sleep then blows Buck's brains out. Kinda reminds me of Johnny's hush Matt I'm trying to draw a bead statement!!
Tom's journey from pacifism and idealism to realism and his slow acceptance of his new reality. His efforts to combine both are really admirable. I especially enjoyed his visit with Hiram on the train.
Sam Middleton before I even discovered he was Addison Travis, Ginny's long lost love (which is covered in one of the next books (#4??).
The fact that Hiram wasn't as corrupt as his mother and was truly horrified at her attempts to have Matt murdered and even more horrified when he discovered she had sent a dozen men to massacre everyone from the Swan canyon who was headed to Montana via a small wagon train and about 250 cattle with Johnny. Including her now ex-husband Matt, her 2 sons Tom and Danny, her daughter-in-law Hetty and her 5 year old granddaughter Mercy. Hiram was so horrified, in fact, that he ran outside and threw up. He even sincerely tried to stop the massacre by sending one of their guards to find the men and bring them back and prevent the murders. The problem with Hiram is that he is weak and he's very much a coward. But, because he is filthy rich, he sees himself as brave and strong, a mover and a shaker in the world. My concern about Hiram is that, once his mother is no longer making these decisions that are so horrifying and he's in charge, will be honor his vow to do whatever it takes to get what he wants except he'll draw the line at murder, it's a line he promises himself he'll never cross? What will he do if murder becomes the only way to get what he wants? I suspect he'll have people eliminated and find a way to justify it to himself in such a way that he can believe he's kept his vow to himself. His mother had been a vicious, manipulative murdering woman since she was 17 years old and had been grooming Hiram since birth to follow in her footsteps. His biological father was a very weak man, though he was physically very strong. He didn't think for himself but followed orders - from Verna - without question. Though now in his early 50's, he'd been in love with Verna since he was a teenager. He was very slow mentally. Hiram was raised by Matt, neither knowing that Matt wasn't his father. So, he has 3 influences in his life: his mother both biologically and she played a major role in his upbringing; his biological father who was a weak man lacking in much intelligence who was always obedient to Verna and who Hiram saw as a servant, therefore beneath him.
And Matt. Who's influence wins?
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Verna, not at all.
The subtle changes in Johnny once he fell in love with Jessica. I especially was extremely disappointed in him for not waiting to include the other 3 kids and Aunt Ginny in his marriage to Jessica. Especially for giving absolutely no thought to the effect his marriage would have on Ginny's place in the household after all she had done and had given up for his family. Without a place in his family all she had left was an empty mansion in San Francisco. He never even discussed it with Jessica to reach a compromise that include both women.
Jessica....for the most part i liked her. But, though she knew he had a daughter and 2 more sons and Aunt Ginny who had helped him raise his kids for 20 years, she didn't have enough respect for his love for his family, she basically decided she wanted to be married then and there, in California, with no consideration for anyone except her and Cora. I'm sure at least Bree would have liked to be there for such a huge event as her father's marriage.
Matt.....for seeing only what he wanted to see and drinking himself into complacency so he could live with it....i can't stand fools and Matt became a fool when he met Verna (in "Johnny McCabe ") and he was still a fool 17 years later when Johnny showed up for a visit. He calls himself a gunhawk, Joe calls him a gunhawk, Johnny calls him a gunhawk. NOT! Matt is not even close to being a gunhawk as defined in Brad Dennison's Western series of books featuring the McCabes.
But the story itself? Outstanding, as usual in this series! Absolutely love them

BD has continued writing the 3rd in the McCabes Clan series. This storyline has Johnny visiting his wife's grave in California. After arrival he finds His brother Matt is no longer in charge and his wife has turned ruler of the area. After one issue and another the good parts of the family head for Montana. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER

Lots of action and no time to become bored. The pace of the book was maintained throughout with no opportunity to be, as I said, bored. Numerous typos/incorrect word usage as well as wrong gender and plurality were encountered throughout the book. The pace of the book holds the reader's interest to the extent that edit errors, though many, do not dissuade from continuing.
I enjoyed this book, but again there was too much repeating going on throughout the book. Not just for recapping but reminders for the readers, who have already noticed, for instance, that Johnny wears his gun low and never holds anything with his right hand. Still readable, but going downhill.
How can you have so many typographical errors in a digital book??? Doesn't anybody proof read kindle books??? I would think it would be very easy to correct them at any time. Aside from that this a very good book, as were the first two in the series. I would recommend them even with all the typos!!!!! Maybe can come up with a tablet that will correct these things as you read since nobody bothers to do it before they present it to the public as a kindle book!
Story line of this western make for a good and intriguing read. If there is one thing I am personally getting tired of in this western series is that all the main characters marry whores, fallen doves, saloon women. Give me a break, were all western women whores? Of course not. So, why does the author continue to include this theme. Makes you wonder about his heritage!
The story is good, but just like the first two in this series, the editing is bad. Many times I had to re-read a sentence and guess from the previous sentence to make any sense of the sentence I just read. To meant times the editing leaves out the word "not" which, of course, can change the whole meaning of a sentence. The author also confuses names of characters which also makes parts of the story hard to follow. The only redeeming quality of this novel is the story. Dennison is a good story teller. I would assume if he was better with grammar and was a better editor, his books could be published by a large publisher. I really don't care much for the writing, but will pay the $.99 for the next in the series, complain about the editing and grammar because I do like the stories.
This series and one before this one does include God, right and wrong way of acting. It has life as I would think it may have been.
I enjoyed the story and all. But the story states he is getting off step
You as the reader do ) to forgive the editing mistakes. the author needs to have a person or persons to edited the many mistakes in the stories. For example; the use of wrong name in one place, or the person is walking but the story states he "stepped out of the saddle." He was walking without his horse with him, how could he step out of the saddle. I just try to over look these mistakes and enjoy the story.
